ACCOUNTING IN THE BLACK IMAGINATION

Accounting in the Black Imagination (January-March 2023) - an artist-led residency in which we co-developed GRAFF, a new practice inspired by ancestral wisdom and craft, that blends art, design and accounting for the Black Imagination.

An an artist-led organisation, MAIA set out to explore how our internal organising could deeply embody the values and principles of our external practice. How might we reimagine our finances and accounting processes beyond legal requirements and “due diligence”? What happens when we hold accounting as a form of radical storytelling? And what might we have to reconsider, re-evaluate, and reconnect with in order to do so?

We worked with André Anderson as dramaturg-in-residence to help us develop a framework for GRAFF, and hosted four artists-in-residence to start building the language and practice with: Kassessa Gandara, Janet Douglas, Courtenay Welcome and Sipho Ndovlu.

Below you can read the GRAFF Scrapbook, which charts the evolution of GRAFF across the residency.
