Black Lives Matter - Reflections from the MAIA Team

Black Lives Matter.png
We hope Black communities around the world are safe and are granted the capacity to rest, mourn, feel, grieve, protest, exercise their rage and heal in whatever way they need to. We hope allies and non-Black communities show up in an informed way, stand in solidarity, resource the movement and do the hard work that is necessary in and beyond this time.
— Amahra Spence & Amber Caldwell, MAIA Co-Founders

Today we have had the joy and privilege of wrapping up our May programme, reflecting on the incredible community we get to be a part of. A community we help to build, shape, support, empower and advocate for.

As you know, a core part of who we are is made up of the Black Community who we love and deeply celebrate. This includes many of the participants, artists, creative practitioners, facilitators, thought leaders and critical thinkers we have had the absolute privilege of hearing from over #MAIAThisMay.

So, while we reflect on the May programme with joy, at the same time, right now, our hearts are heavy with sadness at the news of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Belly Mujinga and so many others.

We too see the systematic and institutionalised racism, the injustice that is today plastered across the news but everyday a reality for the black community, for our siblings in the US, UK and across the diaspora.

As a team at MAIA, we want to take the time to seriously reflect on how we can stand in solidarity and understanding as well as identify what we can continue to do to advocate and support #BlackLivesMatter.

In the meantime, check out our twitter as we retweet and re-share ways we can all make a difference.
